The AMA STEPS Forward program offers a “Chief Wellness Officer Roadmap,” recognizing the value of having an executive-level champion for physician well-being. A CWO or similar leader can coordinate resources and “guide system-wide efforts to improve professional fulfillment” . Organizations like Stanford Medicine have pioneered this role, which comes with dedicated resources and authority to implement wellness strategies. Having a CWO (or committee chair) as a champion ensures accountability and visibility for resilience initiatives (the CWO often recruits a team of departmental champions as well).
