RSL: Moral Distress
UVA Health pioneered a Moral Distress Consultation Service where any staff member can request a consult specifically for a moral distress situation . A specialized team (including ethicists, psychologists, and experienced clinicians) will then facilitate discussions and action planning to address the root causes of the distress. Implementing something similar – even a more ad-hoc “Moral Distress Rapid Response” – is a cutting-edge way to systematically address these issues. For instance, if a physician is distressed by a policy or a patient care decision, the service can mediate and explore solutions (or at least acknowledge the conflict). Having a formal mechanism like this demonstrates the organization recognizes moral distress as an important issue and has a process to confront it.
