RSL: Support for Significant Others of Clinicians
Experts recommend proactively including spouses/SOs in the medical community. For instance, a physician leadership article suggests hosting regular social gatherings for spouses or couples as a structured program . Something as simple as a semi-annual “physician family night” (dinner or picnic where spouses and children are invited) can help spouses build their own peer network (“a community of physician spouses is a huge part of sustaining sanity” for medical families ). This acknowledgement and inclusion of spouses in social events make them feel valued and more understanding of the physician’s work life. Organizations implementing spouse-inclusive events (holiday parties, spouse breakfasts with leadership, etc.) fulfill this criterion directly.
